ほとんど - almost と nearly

「ほとんど」という意味の副詞、almost と nearly。
この使い方を調べてみました。

■ニュアンス
almost のほうが、nearly より近い感じになります。
almost

目標にかなり近づいているけど、あと少し足りない(あと1-2%ぐらい)

nearly

目標にちょっとだけ離れてるけど、あと少しで到達できる(あと4-5%ぐらい)

It's almost 5:00.
It's nearly 5:00.
どちらも、ほぼ5：00の意味になりますが、 almost のほうがより5：00に近い事を暗示しています。

具体的な数値などで表せる場合は、 almost/nearlyのどちらも使えますが、抽象的な"近さ"を表す場合は、 almost を使うようです。
(ほとんど信じられないとか、ほぼ理想通りだとか...)

[×] It's nearly incredible.
(ほとんど信じられない)

■ほとんどの～
主に100%にあたる言葉( all / always / every / full / empty 等)と一緒に使われます。
ちょっと前に間違えたのが、「ほとんどの日本人」って書こうとして

almost Japanese

とやってしまったのですが、正しくは

almost all Japanese / almost every Japanese

のようになります。

Almost all the students are going to attend the lecture.
Nearly all the students are going to attend the lecture.
(ほとんどの学生がその講義に出席するだろう)

Almost everyone got interested in the product.
Nearly everyone got interested in the product.
(ほとんどの人がその製品に関心を持った)

The train is almost always late.
The train is nearly always late.
(その電車はほとんどいつも遅れる)

almost/nearly every day
(ほとんど毎日)

■その他
nearly は否定を意味する言葉を修飾できないため、( no / none / never / nothing / nobody 等)の前に置くことができません。
any も修飾できません。

迷ったらとりあえず almost を使えばよさそうです^^;
